# Primavera P6: How to Import P6 Data into PM

## Export your P6 data and import it into ProjectManager

ProjectManager doesn’t open Primavera P6 files (XER or P6 XML) directly. To move a P6 schedule into ProjectManager, export it from P6 in a format ProjectManager supports, then import that file into a project.

### Before you begin

- **Supported file types:** Microsoft Project (MPP), XML exported from Microsoft Project, Excel and CSV. XML files from other software, including P6 XML, aren’t supported.
- **Best option:** Use a Microsoft Project file if you can. ProjectManager imports tasks, assignees, dependencies and planned dates from MPP and Microsoft Project XML files.
- **Working days and holidays:** Set these before you import. Working days are hard to change after a project is created, and global holidays can’t be added to existing projects.
- **What doesn’t import:** Actual hours don’t import into timesheets. Attachments, comments and tags also don’t import.

### Step 1: Export your schedule from P6

Export the schedule from P6 in one of these formats:

- **Microsoft Project (MPP or XML):** Recommended. This keeps the most schedule data, including dependencies.
- **Excel or CSV:** Export your activities to a spreadsheet. Include activity names, durations, start and finish dates, and predecessors.

### Step 2: Create a project and set working days

1. Click the **+** button in the bottom-left corner and select **Project**.
2. Click the gear icon next to the project name and set your working days to match your P6 calendar.

**Note:** If your P6 schedule uses company-wide holidays, add them as global holidays in **Users & Teams** \> **Holidays** before you create the project.

### Step 3: Import the file

1. Select **Import File** when creating the project. To import into an existing project, open the Gantt view and click the import icon on the ribbon.
2. Click **select file**, choose your file and click **next**.
3. If you’re importing into an existing project, choose one of these options:
     - **Keep and append with the imported data** adds the imported tasks to the project.
     - **Replace with the imported data** removes everything already in the project and replaces it with the file’s contents.

### Step 4: Map columns or choose what to import

- **Excel or CSV:** Map each column in your file to a Gantt column, then click **import**. You can leave columns you don’t need unmapped.
- **MPP or XML:** Choose whether to import the task list only or all data.

**Note:** If your file includes assignees who aren’t users in your account, you’ll be asked to invite them.

### Step 5: Check the schedule logic

1. Compare task durations and dependencies with your P6 schedule.
2. Re-link any tasks that imported without predecessors.
3. Add lag to dependencies where your P6 schedule had it.
4. If you need actual hours from P6, add them to timesheets separately.

### Step 6: Check the critical path and set a baseline

1. On the Gantt, click the filter button, select the critical path filter and save.
2. Compare the critical path with your P6 schedule.
3. When the schedule matches, set a baseline in **Gantt Settings**.

### Troubleshooting

- **The critical path doesn’t match P6:** Look for tasks with missing dependencies or constraints that didn’t carry over. Only linked tasks appear on the critical path.
- **My P6 XML file won’t import:** ProjectManager only supports XML files exported from Microsoft Project. Export from P6 to Microsoft Project format, Excel or CSV instead.
- **Duplicate team members appeared after import:** Make sure resource names are spelled the same way throughout your file.

**Tip:** Keep your original XER file. If a client or owner asks for a P6 submittal later, you’ll still have it.
